Taking them to their pediatric dentist every six months for checkups and cleanings is a great way to ensure that their smile starts developing correctly. However, in between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dentistsatorencoforkids.com\/childrens-dental-checkups.html\">those appointments<\/a>, keep an eye out for these 3 red flags that your children\u2019s oral health might not be at its best. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thumb Sucking <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many infants suck their thumb as a means of security and\ncomfort. That being said, thumb sucking after permanent teeth have started to\nerupt around age 5 or 6 can cause problems, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Bone\nshift. <\/strong>The supporting bone structure might move, causing misalignments in\nthe jaw and roof of the mouth.<\/li><li><strong>Overbite.<\/strong>\nThe continual force of sucking can cause the child to develop an overbite.<\/li><li><strong>Difficult\nspeech.<\/strong> Shifted teeth can make it hard to pronounce certain words.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Thumb sucking is a perfectly normal habit for babies.\nHowever, in order to protect their mouth in the future, it\u2019s a good idea to\nhelp them kick the habit before age 5. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because thumb sucking is generally a security mechanism,\nnegative reinforcement is often ineffective in stopping the behavior. Instead, give\nthem praise and rewards for time spent abstaining from the habit. You could\nalso cover their thumb with a Band-Aid as a reminder. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nursing Bottle Syndrome <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nursing bottle syndrome, also known as baby bottle tooth\ndecay, occurs when a baby constantly ingests liquid containing sugar, such as milk,\nformula, or fruit juice. Drinking from a bottle of sugary liquid at night gives\nbacteria ample time to grow while a child sleeps, increasing the likelihood of\ntooth decay or infection that could spread to the rest of the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to combat nursing bottle syndrome is to give\nyour baby a pacifier or a bottle of water before bed. In addition, shift to a\nsippy cup when your pediatric dentist recommends it \u2013 often by age one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tongue Thrusting <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tongue thrusting is a condition caused by a child pressing\nthe tongue against the lips when swallowing with a force that can over time\nlead to the protrusion of the front teeth over time. Visiting a children\u2019s\ndentist or a speech pathologist can treat this problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your child will be given an oral appliance placed in the upper\narch and palate. While this device is worn, normal lip movement will help\nrealign the teeth. However, it\u2019s important that the teeth still be cleaned in\nand around the item. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking care of your child\u2019s oral health is about a lot more\nthan just brushing and flossing. This list might sound stressful, but your\nchild\u2019s dentist can help you diagnose and treat these conditions.
